Cymbidium aloifolium var. simulans
The type species of the genus! Originally described in 1703 as Epidendrum aloifolium is was transferred by Swartz in 1799 to the new genus, Cymbidium. Horticulturally, it is appreciated for its cascading spike habit, spring into summer blooming season, and heat tolerance. Most aloifoliums have flowers with a green base color while this variety has a cream base color. Simulans also seems to bloom regularly under typical cymbidium conditions while others of this group flower well only under intermediate conditions. Temperature Tolerant. May - July blooming. When awarded two years ago, judges described the color of this cultivar as "nearly black-oxblood". This hybrid comes from the primary crossing of Cymbidiums atropurpureum and canaliculatum. Passed down from the former is a nice coconut-oil fragrance. Flower spike habit is cascading. This cross, registered in 1967 by Dos Pueblos Orchid Company, mates the miniature chinese species, ensifolium with the most famous standard of all time, Alexanderi 'Westonbirt'. The result is a charming, lightly scented, free blooming miniature. The flower color is cream, lightly dusted with burgundy in the center, and a lip heavily dusted/dotted with bugundy. We grow it next to our standard cymbidiums, but it should do equally well in Southern States or in an intermediate greenhouse. This cultivar has been in the trade for years under the above name without proper registration. This led to much confusion since it meant few people knew the actual parentage. In 2001, however, it was properly registered as Miss Taipei Unveiled 1. This gives the parents as sinense and Super Baby (Babylon x ensfolium). Perhaps this accounts for its complex fragrance. Back in 1910 when the plant exporter, the mysterious Mr. Ghose, telegraphed his collecter up in Myanmar to bring back some more of the "sweet smelling" cymbidium, the collecter brought back the only sweet smelling cymbidium he knew; the one we know today as suavissimum. The species Mr. Ghose was referring to was tracyanum, but we are glad this one was brought instead. This species does not usually bloom every season, but does so with profusion when it does. Fall Open House $15 Cymbidiums in Spike
Once again we kick off cymbidium season at our annual Fall Open House (November 7-8 this year), with a selection of cymbiums in spike, at the special price of $15 each. All sorts of colors, shapes, and sizes will be available.
If you can't make it to our open house, we can send a selcetion of five cymbidiums in spike to you (our choice). The price is $135 (includes shipping) for residents of CA, WA, or OR. For all other states $160 (includes shipping). Sorry, but no shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Deadline for ordering is Sunday, November 4th at 4pm. Plants can be shipped between now and two weeks following the Open House.
